Petworth is one of the largest neighborhoods in the Washington D.C. area and is just four miles directly north of Capitol Hill. One of the most noteworthy homes is President Lincoln’s Cottage, where he lived during most of his presidency. Professionals have an easy and quick commute into the city, taking the Georgia Avenue – Petworth Metro. Primarily residential, this neighborhood has bustling sections with fantastic eateries, bars, cafes, and shopping primarily along or near Upshur Street.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Along Upshur Street and Georgia Ave in the downtown area of Petworth, there is a high concentration of restaurants, cafes, retail shops, and markets. There are several boutique-style and unique shops to browse, but one unique shop not to miss is Loyalty Bookstore. It is the kind of book store you want to peruse in search of your next great read. This thriving and vibrant area has an eclectic assortment of cuisines and is the perfect place to find your next stellar meal.
The Hitching Post Restaurant is the spot for absolutely delicious Southern soul food in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Whether it is catfish, shrimp, or a burger, you will likely leave with a smile on your face. For some flavorful Tex-Mex fare, the Commonwealth Cantina is a colorful and fun restaurant where you can order tacos, burritos, and fajitas, in addition to a great beer and whiskey selection.
The best place in town for BBQ is none other than the upscale Cinder BBQ, a neighborhood favorite known for its Texas brisket, pulled pork, chicken, and dry-rub wings. Pair with bourbon peach baked beans, slaw, and collards for the complete meal. Taste mouth-watering gourmet pizzas with your choice of red, white, or green sauce at Timber Pizza Company. The empanada bites are a yummy starter beforehand with a cold beer, wine, or cocktail. If you are in need of a caffeine boost, Qualia Coffee has excellent house-brewed coffee in a very cozy setting.

Things to Do

One of the most historical attractions in Petworth is President Lincoln’s Cottage, the home where he resided throughout most of his presidency. Today, the house is a museum that you can tour to learn more about the life of Abraham Lincoln and the legacy he left. If you are craving time out in nature, the best place to hike is at Rock Creek Park as it is an oasis so close to the city and very scenic.
A short distance to D.C., you have the National Zoo and top museums, with the Smithsonian — the star of them all. The Petworth Community Market is a lovely farmer’s market selling fresh produce, baked goods, bread, cheese, and more on Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.
Each summer, the community is eager for the Petworth Jazz Project, which showcases a live jazz performance in July, August, and September. Locals can bring their blankets and chairs and pick a spot to listen to some great music. You can bring your own food or purchase it from one of the many food trucks available. Come September, Celebrate Petworth is the biggest neighborhood festival celebrating everything about the community, including its history with music, food, activities, and a dog show.
